A change in guard at the top of the ATP and WTA rankings

Former world No.1 players Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova have witnessed a change at the top of the rankings from today after the defending champion Novak Djokovic bowed out in the semi-finals to eventual champion Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova exited in the fourth round to German Sabine Lisicki.

ATP Rankings

Roger Federer is back on top in the ATP rankings.

Roger Federer is now back at the top of the ATP rankings and has matched Pete Sampras’s record of 286 weeks at the top, a place in the rankings which Federer has now been on since June 2010 – a place where many doubted he would ever reach again after fending off a barrage of retirement questions since his 30th birthday.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic has moved down a place to No.2 after Federer’s subsequent victory and rise in the rankings, whilst Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray and David Ferrer have remained in their No.3, No.4 and No.5 rankings respectively.

WTA Rankings

Wimbledon champion Serena Williams has climbed up to No.4 in the rankings.

Beaten Wimbledon semi-finalist Victoria Azarenka has taken over as the women’s world No.1 from Maria Sharapova who has moved down to the No.3 position after her fourth round defeat at the hands of Sabine Lisicki.  Wimbledon runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska has moved up a place to No.2 whilst champion Serena Williams moves up to No.4 from her previous sixth position and it is a remarkable comeback from the American after only a year ago Williams had slumped to 175th place in the WTA rankings due to suffering with a blood clot on her lung.
